Greg Fleming

aka Greg Fleming and the Trains, Greg Fleming and the Working Poor

Since the early 1990s and the release of his 1993 debut album Ghosts Are White, Greg Fleming has been regarded as one of New Zealand’s more talented songwriters, although a 10-year absence from recording and live appearances made many wonder what had become of him. Then in 2010 Fleming kicked back into gear, releasing an ongoing procession of albums and building up a body of work that confirms him as a prolific songwriter with a life-long commitment to his art.

Born in 1966, Fleming grew up in Greytown, Wairarapa. He didn’t really discover music until he moved to Auckland with his family when he was 11. He found his father’s abandoned acoustic guitar in a cupboard and began strumming along to the radio. He was soon jamming with mates at Mt Roskill Grammar, sharing the space with Profile, a group of older boys including future radio DJ Mark Staufer and one Russell Crowe.
