Reggae singer Jules Issa (Ngāti Porou and Kāi Tahu) began her career singing in a Porirua band called Sticks and Shanty. She moved to Auckland before the group made any recordings.

On arrival in the big smoke, she connected with The Twelve Tribes of Israel, and started playing in their band, alongside the Mighty Asterix and Tuffi Culture.
