Chris Thompson was born in England but grew up in New Zealand. He started by playing weekly church youth club dances in high school band The Paragons but eventually returned to the UK, where his career took off in acts including Manfred Mann's Earth Band and Night.

Thompson's high school band The Paragons evolved into Dynasty before he formed Mandrake, a group that played weekend dances in Hamilton. Then in 1972, Thompson returned to England via Australia.
