The Tufnels were formed in the early 1990s, in Auckland by former Bird Nest Roys members Ross Williams (guitar, vocals) and Ross Hollands (vocals) and others from that band's circle of friends including drummer Steve Gilberto.

Named for the guitarist Nigel Tufnel in Spinal Tap, they were the first act to be managed by key industry figure Campbell Smith, who also established their label, Globule Records, which released their sole album, Lurid in 1994 via Sony.
