Blindspott morphed out of a group called Wrench, featuring drummer Shelton Woolright and vocalist Joel Rowell, who met at Rutherford College in the West Auckland suburb of Te Atatu. In 1997, Damian Alexander stepped in to take over from Rowell, while Gareth Fleming (bass), Marcus Powell (guitar) and Karl Vilisini (turntables) also joined the band. They began writing their own music and entered Battle of the Bands, but only made it through the early rounds of the competition. It didn’t put them off: the band organised their own shows at Auckland bars Papa Jacks and Safari Lounge and used the money to record their first single ‘Nil By Mouth’ in 2001.
